Student Union

When it comes to the student experience, the Student Union is the key stakeholder. They always have their best interests in mind and organize a variety of events throughout the academic year to make studying more enjoyable.

Some of the most loved events organized by the Student Union include Christmas and Valentine days` celebrations, Beer Pong Tournament, Car Orienteering Competition, and others. The biggest event organized by the RBS Student Union is the Networking dinner – an annual dinner for students and representatives of Latvia’s leading companies where they get to hear inspirational speeches by industry or government leaders and network with each other. The Student Union also represents students’ academic interests, cooperating with the administration to improve the study process.

Traditional Meet the Neighbors run

The welcoming of the new students starts with a run to the closest companies and state institutions whose representatives greet students with the beginning of their studies. It takes place together with the Bachelor Program Team. This run is the first activity that the new students have together.

Bonding camp

New students start their studies with a three day long camp that takes place outside of the Riga. They get to know life in different municipalities by visiting local companies and gathering information on real life challenges that they are facing.
The Student Union is organizing various team building activities for the camp to make this experience fun and enjoyable. After returning back to Riga, students are split in teams to solve challenges of the respective municipalities. The students are presenting their solutions as their first assignment in the course “First Year Seminar”.

Thanksgiving celebration

As an American style school, it is important for us to educate our students on American culture. One of the initiatives we have is to celebrate Thanksgiving with dinner.
Traditionally, the Bachelor Program Lead of the school carves turkey for everyone while the Student Union organizes fun activities. There is also a pie baking contest where blind tasting takes place to determine the best cook.

Project based study process

Study process itself is an important component of student experience at RBS. All are as practical as possible to allow the implementation of advanced theoretical knowledge already during the study process. All courses involve many practical tasks and a lot of teamwork. These are just a couple of examples to illustrate what kind of projects you can expect at RBS.

Organizational behavior final exam
“Grand Slam Final”

The format of the exam is a 24 hours long hackathon during which the students stay at the school. They work in teams of 7- 8 people on various business challenges.
During the 24h, not only do the students have to solve the challenges but they also have to create a prototype using lean start-up methodology or MVP concept for the app. Claudio Rivera who is course Director supports the students through the hackathon period by organizing at least 4 check ins with the teams.

Social projects course

The course brings together the second year students from both RBS bachelor programs (BBA & BITL) into joint teams. They work with two major charities, SOS children’s homes and Palidzesim Viens Otram.

The students work with project managers in areas such as children who have difficulties with school, families with financial problems, alcoholism, children who have suffered bereavement and charity fundraising. Because the projects are short, most of the work is helping to develop how the

charities themselves can do better work. Last year one group researched how child adoption is managed all over the world. They identified best practices and lessons from 6 other major countries and produced a work plan for the charities to develop better Latvian practices. This year the projects will run for the whole student year to give teams a greater chance to understand the problems people and charities face and to use their business and IT skills to more effect.
